in Their Own Words is by teens, about teens and for teens and all the people who care about and love them. The book began as a result of the many confidences students shared with me during my years of teaching art in the public schools. While some of these stories are what we could call normal, many are filled with uncertainty and angst. I have the deepest respect for young people who struggle to get through these years. Perhaps these narratives will help current adolescents understand that being a teen is temporary, that they are not alone, and that stability and growth are possible.
